Is Oppression the Mother of Creativity?

We think censorship is the enemy of progress, and that culture flourishes when it is free. But form Oscar Wilde to Ai Wei Wei, powerful art is often born out of oppression. Is the imagination most free when it is in chains? Does innovation need boundaries to push against, or is censorship always a threat to creativity?
